A beautiful example of Edwardian fascination with the “mystique of the East,” this circa 1902 hallmarked sterling silver mustard pot is richly cast in high relief with scenes of traditional life — an exquisite ode to the Orientalist style so beloved at the turn of the 20th century.
Around the body unfolds a continuous narrative:
• Musicians serenading in lush gardens
• Figures gathering, conversing, and playing
• Hunters with birds and bows
• Villagers fishing among bamboo groves
• Traditional homes nestled in nature
Every surface is alive with detail — layered foliage, lotus-like florals, textured earth, wildlife, and flowing robes that capture a romanticised view of daily East-Asian life. This level of repoussé and chased workmanship is characteristic of T. H. Hazlewood & Co, a respected Birmingham silversmith active until 1925 and known for their ornamental domestic wares.
The hinged domed lid lifts to reveal the original deep cobalt-blue glass liner, still present after more than a century — a rarity on its own. A small sterling silver spoon accompanies the set, completing the ensemble.
The handle is beautifully formed, with a rope-twist profile that enhances the exotic feel and adds tactile dimension.
Note : The silver value alone works out to just over R1700 at todays silver price.
Measurements : The mustard pot measures 9.5cm x 5.4cm x 4.1cm and weight of 129 grams. The sterling mustart pot excluding the glass inner with a weight of 67grams.
