RARE FIND!Antique Art Nouveau Mother-of-Pearl & Faux Sapphire Pendant (Circa 1900s).
A breathtaking antique Art Nouveau / Jugendstil pendant dating to the early 1900s, exquisitely crafted in sterling silver with all the hallmarks of the romantic and nature-inspired design language that defined the period.
The pendant begins with a beautifully ornamental bail, set with a round-cut faux sapphire and two dainty seed pearls — a quintessential Art Nouveau pairing symbolizing purity and intuition. Dangling gracefully below is a large oval mother-of-pearl cabochon, glowing with its natural iridescent sheen, representing the moon’s divine feminine energy. This centerpiece is encircled by a delicate halo of faux sapphires and tiny seed pearls, echoing the celestial color palette beloved by turn-of-the-century artisans.
Suspended from the base is a naturally shaped mother-of-pearl drop, completing the piece with gentle movement and organic elegance. The reverse features a radiant, sunburst backplate, showcasing the fine craftsmanship typical of European ateliers working in the Jugendstil tradition — where even hidden details were treated as miniature works of art.
This pendant perfectly bridges Romanticism and Symbolism, two key influences in Art Nouveau jewelry. The luminous mother of pearl evokes the goddess Selene and the flow of oceanic life, while the deep faux sapphire tones signify wisdom, sincerity, and spiritual insight. Together, they create a talisman of serenity and protection.
Comparable Jugendstil mother-of-pearl pieces appear in European collections and specialty auctions, often attributed to German or Austrian workshops circa 1895–1910. Similar examples command between £295 (≈R6,800) and $800 (≈R13,000) depending on condition and provenance.
