A Deco Jungle Queen —1930s Faux Tortoiseshell Cameo Necklace.

Transport yourself straight to the glamorous world of the 1930s, where Art Deco elegance flirted with the exotic flair of faraway lands. This rare and utterly captivating necklace is a true time traveler from that era — a perfect fusion of vintage sophistication and playful charm.

At first glance, your eye is drawn to the show-stopping centerpiece: a bold, generously sized pendant, exquisitely carved into the right-facing silhouette of a young woman, her hair tied back with a sweet little bow. She appears almost like a flapper girl frozen in time — chic, poised, and utterly Parisian, yet with a hint of jungle mystique.

The pendant, along with the entire necklace, is masterfully crafted from rich faux tortoiseshell — a wildly popular material during the Art Deco period. Faux tortoiseshell (commonly made from early plastics like celluloid or galalith) offered an ethical and fashionable alternative to the endangered real thing, while still mimicking the hypnotic amber-brown swirls and fiery golden flecks that made tortoiseshell so desirable since antiquity.

The chain is composed of elongated marquise-shaped links, each gently curved and polished. These striking segments are connected by tiny brass jump rings, allowing the necklace to drape effortlessly while maintaining its bold, sculptural silhouette.

Art Deco designers of the 1920s-30s were obsessed with symmetry, geometry, and exotic motifs — drawing inspiration from Egyptian discoveries (think King Tut’s tomb in 1922), African art, and Asian aesthetics. This necklace channels that fascination, blending stylized minimalism with organic, almost tribal undertones.

Not only is this necklace a rare survivor from the glamorous interwar period, but it's also a fabulous conversation piece — effortlessly balancing vintage drama with a modern edge.
