"Little Blossom Keeper" | Vintage Japanese Kokeshi Doll.

A delightful and highly collectible vintage Japanese Kokeshi doll dating to the 1950s.

This charming hand-carved wooden figure embodies the warmth and innocence that made Kokeshi dolls beloved throughout Japan and beyond. Featuring a beautifully rounded hairstyle, sweet hand-painted facial features, and a traditional kimono decorated with delicate floral motifs, she radiates a wonderfully gentle personality.

Unlike the more elongated traditional forms, this doll displays a compact and playful silhouette, reflecting the creative evolution of Kokeshi craftsmanship during the mid-20th century. The warm natural wood grain remains beautifully visible throughout, enhancing the doll's organic character and handcrafted appeal.

Kokeshi dolls originated in the mountainous Tōhoku region of northern Japan during the early 1800s, where they were crafted by master woodworkers and sold as keepsakes to visitors of local hot springs. Over time they became cherished symbols of happiness, good fortune, friendship, and protection within the home.

The floral decoration adorning her kimono is traditionally associated with renewal, joy, and the fleeting beauty of nature — themes deeply rooted within Japanese art and culture.

A wonderfully charming survivor from post-war Japan, combining folk-art simplicity with timeless decorative appeal and collectible charm.

Similar vintage Kokeshi dolls regularly retail internationally between approximately $200 (R3300 ) and $450 (R7,400), making them highly sought-after treasures among collectors of Japanese folk art.
