An opal triplet is a composite gemstone made from three layers: a thin slice of genuine precious opal sandwiched between a dark backing and a protective transparent dome, usually quartz or glass.

The dark backing enhances the opal's spectacular colours, while the clear dome protects the delicate opal layer and gives it a beautifully rounded cabochon appearance.
