The Order of the Crown of Italy (Ordine della Corona d’Italia) was established in 1868 by King Vittorio Emanuele II shortly after the unification of Italy. Initially created to celebrate builders of the new Kingdom, it soon became a prestigious civilian and military order.
During WWI (1914–1918), the order was awarded to distinguished military personnel and influential civilians who served the Kingdom with honour — making examples from this period especially desirable.
