RARE FIND – Edwardian Sterling Silver Cheroot/Cigar Holder Pendant.

A true treasure from the elegant Edwardian era, this antique hallmarked sterling silver cheroot/cigar holder pendant is both a rare survivor and a conversation piece. Crafted circa 1900 in Chester by the respected silversmiths Charles Lyster & Son, it carries full English hallmarks clearly struck near the rim.

The body of the holder is gracefully tapering in form and is entirely adorned with hand-engraved scrolling foliage and floral decoration—an intricate display of craftsmanship typical of the Edwardian taste for refinement and ornamentation. Inside, the gilt interior remains intact, a subtle luxury touch designed to protect the silver from tarnish and add a sense of opulence.

Originally, this holder was made for cheroots or slim cigars. These holders were also highly fashionable accessories, often suspended from a fob chain or chatelaine and carried by both ladies and gentlemen who moved in refined social circles. Today, it can be worn as a striking pendant, displayed in a collection, or even repurposed as a tiny keepsake case—perfect for holding a note, a lock of hair, or a miniature memento.

Charles Lyster & Son were well-regarded silversmiths working in Chester at the turn of the 20th century. Chester, one of the oldest assay towns in England, is renowned for producing some of the most beautifully decorated small silverwares—cheroot holders, vesta cases, vinaigrettes, and sovereign cases—all finely engraved and destined for fashionable Edwardian society.

Pieces like this are exceptionally scarce and sought after today, especially those hallmarked for Chester, as the assay office closed in 1962.

Similar engraved sterling cheroot holders from the same era appear on the market between £250–£450 (R5,600–R10,000) depending on condition, provenance, and maker.
