HUGE Antique Victorian Hallmarked Sterling Silver Maltese Cross Fob Pendant (Circa 1887).
A truly exceptional and generously sized antique fob pendant, dating to circa 1887, and crafted in solid hallmarked sterling silver by the renowned Birmingham silversmith William James Dingley.
This striking piece is designed in the form of a Maltese cross, a timeless and symbolic motif long associated with honour, bravery, and chivalric orders. Each arm of the cross is beautifully defined, with softly textured panels framed by polished silver edges, giving the piece depth and contrast.
Encircling the cross is a finely detailed laurel wreath border, symbolising victory, achievement, and distinction—a design element commonly found in prestigious awards and commemorative pieces of the Victorian era.
At the centre sits a circular cartouche, left unengraved, offering the opportunity for personalisation or simply appreciated in its clean, understated form.
The pendant is fitted with a large, substantial suspension ring and connector, typical of traditional fob pieces that would have originally hung from a gentleman’s watch chain, adding both functionality and bold visual presence.
Fob pendants like this were an essential part of a Victorian gentleman’s attire, worn on a pocket watch chain and often used as seals or decorative tokens.
The silver scrap value alone works out to over R1100, making this not only a historic piece but one with strong intrinsic metal value.
*chain not included*
Measurements : The fob pendant measures 4.5cm in diameter excluding the bail and weight of 27.7 grams.
