RARE ANTIQUE TREASURE – Victorian Scottish Mourning Brooch/Pendant.
A truly exceptional find, this generous-sized Victorian-era sterling silver Scottish mourning brooch/pendant carries with it layers of history, symbolism, and sentiment.
While traditional Scottish agate jewelry is highly collectible in its own right, pieces crafted specifically for mourning purposes are exceedingly scarce—making this example a rare and desirable treasure for any serious collector.
At its heart lies a poignant glass-covered compartment, preserving a woven lock of hair in a basket-weave pattern—an intimate and cherished Victorian tradition meant to honor and remember a loved one. Surrounding the central memento are six cabochon settings of Scottish agate, showcasing the natural earthy hues and banded patterns beloved in Victorian Scottish jewelry.
Over the years, three of the original agates have been replaced with an early form of hardened resin, carefully chosen to resemble the missing stones’ colors—an old repair that speaks to the value this brooch held for its previous owners, ensuring it remained wearable and complete.
The sterling silver frame is further embellished with delicate hand-engraving, adding a refined touch of craftsmanship and artistry. The reverse reveals a sturdy pin fitting, as well as a loop, allowing this piece to be worn both as a brooch or a pendant.
Scottish agate jewelry remains in high demand, with non-mourning examples of similar size often commanding between £300 (R7,000) and £550 (R13,000). Given its mourning theme and rarity—but priced accordingly due to the replacement of three agates—this piece represents a highly collectible yet accessible opportunity for those with an eye for history and sentiment.
