A truly magnificent Antique Victorian late 19th-century calling (visiting) card case, exquisitely hand-crafted from rich, dark blonde tortoiseshell and adorned with luxurious mother-of-pearl inlays — a hallmark of the refined artistry of the Victorian era.

The surface is beautifully accented with engraved mother-of-pearl corner inlays and a central diamond-shaped mother-of-pearl cartouche, intricately hand-engraved with delicate floral motifs and a shield. This central plaque would have traditionally been used to monogram the initials of the case’s owner — a symbol of prestige and social refinement.

During the 1800s, such cases were essential accessories among society’s elite, used to store calling or visiting cards — the social “passport” of Victorian etiquette. Crafted from rare materials and often presented as sentimental gifts, these pieces reflected both personal status and artistic taste.

The craftsmanship on this example is nothing short of superb — with smooth, polished panels and a secure push-button hinge clasp still in working order.

The luminous interplay between the deep amber-brown shell and the iridescent pearl makes this a museum-worthy collector’s piece.

Today, this treasure makes a perfect conversation piece—ideal for storing business cards or small keepsakes. It remains in beautiful antique condition with a charming aged patina consistent with its age and history.

Comparable antique tortoiseshell and mother-of-pearl card cases of this quality are highly sought after today, commanding values between R3,500 and R5,000, with the finest examples achieving higher prices at international antique fairs and auctions.

Measurements : The case measures 10.5cm x 7.5cm and weight of 43 grams.
