RARE FIND — Antique Qing Dynasty Hetian Jade Phoenix Pendant .

A truly soulful treasure from Imperial China, this generously sized pendant is exquisitely hand-carved from pale celadon Hetian (Hotan) jade and dates to the Qing Dynasty (circa mid–late 19th century, approx. 1800s). The carving is wonderfully fluid and deeply symbolic, featuring a majestic phoenix rendered in elegant openwork, nestled amongst scrolling florals and foliate tendrils. Every curve feels intentional — light, movement, and balance were clearly at the heart of its creation.

The jade displays that unmistakable soft, waxy translucence Hetian jade is famed for, with gentle tonal variations that glow beautifully against the skin

Fine feather details, pierced negative space, and softly rounded edges speak to the hand of a skilled master carver rather than mass production.

In Chinese symbolism, the phoenix represents rebirth, harmony, virtue, prosperity, and feminine power. It is also a powerful emblem of peace and auspicious beginnings, often associated with the Empress and high status.

This piece originally began its life as a brooch, as was common during the Qing period, and was later sensitively converted into a pendant — a practice frequently seen with antique jade carvings to allow continued wear and appreciation across generations. The later metal mount and bail respectfully frame the jade without overpowering it, allowing the carving to remain the hero.

Authentic antique Hetian jade phoenix carvings from the Qing Dynasty are increasingly scarce, especially in this generous size and quality. Comparable examples currently offered online are priced between $250 (R4100) and $550 (R9000), making this a highly desirable collector’s piece with both historical depth and wearable beauty.
