RARE FIND | EDWARDIAN 9CT ROSE GOLD & CARAMEL BAKELITE TORPEDO EARRINGS.

An absolutely fabulous and wonderfully unusual pair of antique Edwardian-era drop earrings, combining warm 9ct rose gold with beautifully elongated caramel-brown Bakelite torpedo drops.

Each earring features a long, elegantly tapered drop in a rich butterscotch/caramel tone, suspended from a fine length of 9ct rose gold chain and finished with traditional 9ct rose gold shepherd’s hook fittings. The movement is gorgeous — the long drops gently sway when worn, giving them that wonderfully dramatic yet refined silhouette so associated with jewellery of the early 20th century.

EARLY BAKELITE
Bakelite was developed in 1907 by Leo Baekeland and became the first fully synthetic plastic. Its introduction opened an entirely new world for jewellery design, allowing makers to imitate the warm appearance of materials such as amber, horn and tortoiseshell while creating bold new forms and colours.

The beautiful caramel colouring of these drops has a wonderfully warm, almost amber-like appearance, with the softly aged surface adding enormously to their vintage character.

THE TORPEDO DROP
Long tapered or torpedo-shaped earrings were particularly fashionable around the late Victorian, Edwardian and Art Nouveau periods, when elongated earrings complemented the graceful lines and increasingly fluid fashions of the era. Examples can be found fashioned from jet, glass, rock crystal, horn and, as new materials emerged, early plastics.

What makes this pair especially striking is their wonderful length — as the photographs show, they create an incredibly elegant statement when worn without feeling overly heavy or elaborate.

A beautiful marriage of early material innovation and classic antique gold jewellery — unusual, sophisticated and exceptionally wearable more than a century later.
