An absolutely FABULOUS piece of Victorian symbolism! This exceptional antique gilt-brass belt buckle takes the form of a dramatic coiled serpent, its entire body glittering with individually set clear faceted paste stones and finished with wonderfully striking ruby-red paste eyes.

The serpent curls around to meet its own tail, creating the ancient Ouroboros motif — a symbol with roots stretching back to ancient Egypt and traditionally representing eternity, infinity, renewal and the endless cycle of life. During the Victorian era, serpent jewellery became particularly fashionable and was often associated with eternal love, devotion and everlasting bonds.

VICTORIAN PASTE
Paste is finely cut glass created to imitate the brilliance of precious gemstones. Far from being considered merely “costume” jewellery, beautifully cut paste was enormously fashionable throughout the Georgian and Victorian periods — and this buckle certainly delivers the sparkle!

I especially LOVE the little serpent head, surrounded by a cluster of clear stones and those two fiery red eyes. 

And she absolutely does NOT have to remain a buckle! As shown in the last photograph, it can easily be suspended from a chain and transformed into one seriously dramatic statement necklace.
