RARE FIND! Art Deco-Era Jogja Silver Brooch — Javanese Paradise Birds (c.1930s).

An exceptional treasure from the Indonesian island of Java — this Art Deco-era .800 silver brooch is a shining example of Yogyakarta / Djokja (Jogja) silverwork, celebrated for its exquisite repoussé detailing and deeply carved motifs.

Hand-crafted circa 1930s, the brooch takes a round medallion form, pierced and sculpted with dramatic depth. At its heart are two stylised Javanese Paradise Birds , their long curling tails looping into scrolls that form a dynamic mirrored composition. These mystical birds — associated with beauty, nobility, and spiritual transcendence — were traditional symbols of divine elegance in Javanese culture.

Above them rises a radiating fan motif reminiscent of a lotus crown or unfolding sunburst — both beloved Art Deco design themes and ancient Southeast Asian symbols of rebirth and enlightenment. Surrounding elements echo the flowing lines of feathers and foliage, giving the piece a harmonious balance of naturalism and symmetry.

Jogja silver is world-renowned for its deep hand engraving, oxidised recesses, and raised relief patterns, influenced by Hindu-Buddhist iconography and later by Dutch colonial aesthetics. This brooch embodies that fusion beautifully — the bold symmetry and stylisation of Art Deco intertwined with the rich storytelling spirit of Javanese craft tradition.

Jogja pieces from this era are increasingly collectible, with similar examples offered internationally between (R1,600–R6,500) depending on detail and condition.

Measurements : The brooch measures 5.1cm in diameter and weight of 11 grams.
