An Heirloom in Silver – A Rare Oversized Candida Pendant by Joe Calafato.
Bold, beautiful, and unmistakably handcrafted, this oversized vintage pendant is a true showstopper from the celebrated Joe Calafato, one of South Africa’s most beloved and collectible silversmiths. Crafted in solid sterling silver, the pendant hails from his iconic Candida range—a series known for its romantic revival of antique aesthetics, with a strong Art Nouveau influence.
Designed in a striking diamond (tilted square) form, the piece is fully adorned with deeply embossed florals and acanthus leaves, curling and blooming in every direction. At the heart of the pendant sits a radiant central flower—its petals lush and lifelike, surrounded by ornate foliate scrolls that seem to ripple with vintage charm. The floral work is rich in texture and depth, enhanced by the natural oxidization in the recesses, creating dramatic contrast and antique charm.
Stamped discreetly "CANDIDA", this pendant bears the signature of a master craftsman. Joe Calafato, whose work flourished throughout the mid-to-late 20th century in South Africa, was renowned for his expert repoussé and chased silverwork. His Candida range, in particular, gained a cult following for blending classical European motifs with meticulous local artistry. While rings, brooches, and bracelets from this line occasionally surface in vintage collections, pendants of this scale and intricacy are exceptionally rare—making this an extraordinary collector’s piece.
While I’ve had the privilege of finding new homes for many Candida pieces over the years, this pendant is a first—and it’s utterly breathtaking. Its scale, intricacy, and presence set it apart as something truly exceptional.
