Antique 1918 Hallmarked Sterling Silver Fob Pendant by H.W. Ashford & Co. | Double-Sided Maltese Cross Design.
This substantial and beautifully crafted antique sterling silver fob pendant is a striking example of Edwardian craftsmanship, dating to circa 1918. Fully hallmarked and made in Birmingham, England by the renowned silversmiths H.W. Ashford & Co, the piece is forged in the enduring shape of a Maltese cross, symbolizing bravery, honor, and chivalry—a form traditionally associated with knighthood and gallantry.
The fob is double-sided, with mirror-image designs on both front and back—a rare and desirable feature.
At the heart of the cross lies a blank shield cartouche, left unengraved, intended for personalization (such as initials or a date).
The arms of the Maltese cross are richly decorated with hand-engraved scrollwork and foliate motifs, adding a flourish of Baroque elegance and showcasing the precision of period hand engraving.
The topmost arm of the cross extends into a crown-like flourish, further elevating its heraldic appearance.
Crafted in solid sterling silver, with clear and crisp Birmingham assay marks visible on the top, including the maker's mark for H.W. Ashford & Co, the lion passant (for sterling), the Birmingham anchor, and the date letter (corresponding to 1918).
