RARE FIND – Antique Early Victorian Scottish Agate Brooch.
Up for admiration is a marvelous large-sized Scottish brooch, dating back to the early Victorian era (circa 1840s–1860s), crafted in sterling silver. Circular in form, this jewel features a distinctive open engraved ring at the center, a design that was highly fashionable in Scotland during the mid-19th century.
The brooch is exquisitely inlaid with eight triangular shaped panels of mixed agates, each carefully hand-cut and fitted to create a kaleidoscope of natural beauty. From rich forest green moss agates to fiery orange jaspers and banded chalcedony, every segment celebrates the variety of stones Scotland is famed for. The stones are bordered in sterling silver and framed by a finely rope-twist border, a detail that adds to its elegance and authenticity.
These Scottish agate brooches, also called "pebble jewelry," gained immense popularity after Queen Victoria and Prince Albert famously embraced Scottish traditions at Balmoral. They became cherished tokens of national pride and sentimental keepsakes, often worn with tartan shawls or cloaks.
Today, authentic Victorian Scottish brooches are highly collectible, with similar examples commanding between $180 (R3000) and $350 (R6000) online depending on condition, size, and intricacy. This piece, with its large size, bold color play, and original fittings, stands out as a fine representation of Scotland’s lapidary artistry in the Victorian age.
Measurements :The brooch meadures 5cm in diameter and weight of 20.8grams.
