RARE FIND — Antique Knights of Pythias Fraternal Watch Fob Pendant.

An extraordinary and historically rich treasure, this antique gold-filled Knights of Pythias watch fob pendant is a remarkable example of 19th- to early 20th-century fraternal jewelry — a period when secret orders and brotherhoods flourished with ritual, symbolism, and craftsmanship.

The pendant is masterfully shaped as a cross pattée, with finely chased gold borders and deep black enamel panels. At its center gleams the emblem of the Knights of Pythias — the crossed sword and knight’s helmet over a blue, yellow and red enamel triangle inscribed with the letters F – C – B, representing the fraternity’s sacred motto: Friendship, Charity, and Benevolence.

Atop the pendant sits an articulated skull and crossbones, a memento mori symbol reminding its wearer of mortality and the virtues of honor and brotherhood beyond the grave. The skull’s eyes are set with tiny red garnet cabochons, adding a haunting yet beautiful glint of realism.

Founded in 1864 by Justus H. Rathbone, the Knights of Pythias was the first fraternal organization to be chartered by an Act of the U.S. Congress. Its ideals were based on the ancient legend of Damon and Pythias — a story of unwavering friendship and loyalty even in the face of death. The order grew rapidly, counting members among soldiers, statesmen, and civic leaders.

Wearing or carrying such a piece signified not only one’s membership but also one’s moral compass — a quiet pledge to live by Friendship, Charity, and Benevolence. The skull symbol served as both a reminder of life’s fragility and a promise of eternal brotherhood.
