RARE FIND !! A powerful little treasure packed with Victorian mystique and ancient Mediterranean symbolism.
Here we have an Antique Victorian-era Cornicello pendant, crafted with a sterling silver cap and a beautifully curved piece of genuine Mediterranean red coral—one of the most prized organic materials of the 19th century.
The coral itself is that unmistakable, rich oxblood–to–salmon red Mediterranean shade, revered for centuries as a protective material against misfortune, jealousy, and the legendary “evil eye.” Its wonderfully organic twisted, tapered form—not perfectly straight, but naturally flowing—shows it was carved by hand from real coral, not molded or dyed like later 20th-century examples.
The cornicello (Italian for “little horn”) is one of the oldest protective talismans in Mediterranean culture. Its origins trace back thousands of years to:
*Ancient Rome, where curved horn amulets represented fertility, virility, strength, and good fortune.
*Southern Italy & Sicily, where coral was believed to come from sacred sea creatures and possessed strong protective powers.
*Victorian superstition, where charms and amulets surged in popularity and were worn discreetly under clothing for safety and spiritual protection.
Traditionally, a cornicello must be curved, organic, and pointed—never smooth or straight—which this beautiful example embodies perfectly. The Victorians believed that coral, especially red Mediterranean coral, carried life-force energy and could absorb or deflect negative influences. Pairing coral with sterling silver, a metal associated with purity and lunar protection, created a talisman with double potency.
Antique coral cornicelli are increasingly rare due to coral harvesting restrictions, making early examples like this highly sought after by collectors.
Similar authentic Victorian coral horns online range between $120–$250 (R2200–R4500) depending on size, material, and condition.
