Flowing downward, the body of the seal blossoms into a richly embossed and engraved floral motif, each panel adorned with scrollwork and botanical flourishes that speak to the Victorians’ love of naturalistic design.

The base holds the pièce de résistance: a round carnelian cabochon, tube-set within a scalloped flower-shaped frame. Carnelian, with its deep russet warmth, was one of the most beloved gemstones of the 19th century — prized not only for its beauty but also for its associations with vitality, courage, and protection. Historically, carnelian seals were favored for intaglios and signets, as the stone’s fine grain made it ideal for carving detailed impressions in wax.
