Antique Victorian Sterling Silver Vesta Case – Stokes & Ireland, Birmingham c.1888.
A petite treasure from the height of the Victorian era – this small ladies’ hallmarked sterling silver vesta case was made in Birmingham circa 1888 by the renowned silversmiths Stokes & Ireland Ltd.
Crafted in solid silver, its surface ripples with bold diagonal fluting, creating a shell-like texture that dances with light and shadow. The hinged lid snaps neatly shut, protecting the matches within – a vital accessory for every fashionable lady of the late 19th century.
Inside the lip of the case, crisp English hallmarks tell its story: the anchor of Birmingham, the lion passant for sterling silver purity, and the date letter confirming its 1888 birth. Alongside sits the maker’s mark of Stokes & Ireland Ltd, one of Birmingham’s most prolific silversmithing firms of the Victorian and Edwardian age. Founded in 1881 by John Stokes and Walter Ireland, the company became well known for their production of high-quality small silverwares – vinaigrettes, sovereign cases, and vestas like this one – many of which were exported across the Empire.
What sets this case apart is its feminine proportions and striking design – smaller than the usual gentleman’s vesta, and perfectly sized to slip into a reticule, chatelaine, or even a pocket. Today, while once used to carry matches, it makes a delightful conversation piece – ideal for repurposing as a quirky breath mint or pill container, a secret compartment for love notes, or as a jewel of a collector’s cabinet.
Measurements :The vesta case measure 4cm x 3.2cm and weight of 17 grams .
