EDWARDIAN ART NOUVEAU | STERLING SILVER & BLOODSTONE BROOCH – c.1900–1910.
What a fabulous little piece of wearable Art Nouveau! Dating to the Edwardian era, circa 1900–1910, this beautifully handcrafted brooch is fashioned in sterling silver and centres around a generously sized rectangular natural bloodstone agate cabochon.
The bloodstone is a wonderful deep forest green, with its natural markings and inclusions giving the stone plenty of character. Rather than a conventional setting, the stone is held within an wonderfully elaborate handcrafted silver framework, with curling whiplash scrolls, little silver spheres and stylised botanical details wrapping around the sides and corners.
The design is wonderfully typical of the Art Nouveau movement, which celebrated flowing lines, asymmetry and forms inspired by vines, flowers and the natural world. I especially love how the silverwork almost appears to be growing around the stone rather than simply holding it in place!
BLOODSTONE
Bloodstone, also known as heliotrope, is a variety of chalcedony traditionally characterised by a deep green body with occasional red or reddish-brown inclusions. It has been treasured since antiquity and historically associated with courage, vitality, strength and protection.
Finished to the reverse with its period-style pin fitting, this is such an unusual and beautifully sculptural antique jewel — earthy, mystical and unmistakably Art Nouveau!
Measurements :The brooch measures 2.8cm x 2.8cm and weight of 15.3 grams.
