Up for grabs is one of the most exceptional WWII-era sweetheart brooches I’ve come across in ages! This circa 1939–1945 treasure features the South African Navy officer’s emblem — the classic fouled anchor surrounded by a laurel wreath and topped with a naval crown — meticulously hand-carved from pre-ban ivory in stunning relief detail.
The emblem sits proudly on a hand-shaped dark horn backing, giving a dramatic contrast between the creamy ivory and deep brown horn tones. The reverse shows its original hand-fitted metal pin and safety chain attachment — a clear indicator of its artisan, sailor-made origin, likely crafted aboard ship or as a wartime keepsake for a loved one back home.
These sweetheart brooches were cherished tokens exchanged between servicemen and their sweethearts or family during WWII, symbolizing loyalty, love, and connection across the seas. The naval crown motif represents maritime strength and honour, while the anchor remains the eternal symbol of hope and steadfastness — particularly poignant during wartime.
A truly rare South African naval artifact, beautifully preserved and imbued with both craftsmanship and history. Similar ivory sweetheart brooches from the era are highly sought after by collectors, with values reaching well above R3,500–R5,000, depending on condition and provenance.
Measurements : The brooch measures 4.4cm x 3.9cm.The brooch with a weight of 14.6 grams.
