RARE BAKELITE TREASURE – Art Deco Persian Dagger Brooch (c.1930s).
Be still, collector hearts! Up for admiration is a marvelous and oversized Art Deco–era novelty brooch, exquisitely carved in the exotic form of a Persian dagger (khanjar) — a highly desirable motif in vintage Bakelite jewels of the 1930s.
This captivating piece is crafted from two stunning Bakelite colours:
• A rich, warm butterscotch blade with elegantly sculpted curves
• A translucent “apple juice” bakelite handle, beautifully ribbed and glowing like honey when it catches the light
Together they create an irresistible visual contrast — bold, luxurious, and unmistakably Deco.
Finely detailed brass accents and rivet-style studs enhance the hilt, lending an almost armour-like aesthetic. From the blade dangle three draped brass chains, adding movement and theatrical flair. These Persian-style dagger brooches were produced only in limited numbers during the 1930s, making surviving examples exceptionally scarce today.
The scale is generous and statement-worthy, making it a standout wearable sculpture.
A similar example is currently listed around ZAR 4,200, while another recently sold for approx. USD $140 (±ZAR 2,300) — confirming the strong desirability and collectors’ market for these sculptural Bakelite weapon motifs.
Measurements : The brooch measures 10.4cm x 7cm and weight of 22.7grams.
