Modernist Circle Statement Necklace – Magnolia, New York (c. 1990s).
What a looker this one is! This fabulously modernist vintage necklace hails from the 1990s and was created by the New York–based designer Magnolia—a name quietly admired by collectors who appreciate sculptural form, clever texture play, and effortless wearability.
Crafted in solid sterling silver, the necklace is composed of an elegant procession of circular elements that dance beautifully along the neckline.
The design alternates between open pierced rings and solid discs, creating rhythm, movement, and negative space that feels both architectural and playful. Each circle is individually finished, some treated with a rich black oxidised surface, others luxuriously gold plated, and a few left in bright silver—resulting in a striking trio of tones that feels bold yet perfectly balanced.
The circles feature a mix of fine linear texturing and hammered, organic finishes, giving the necklace wonderful depth and tactility. As the design progresses, the discs subtly graduate in size, drawing the eye inward and framing the collarbone in a way that is incredibly flattering when worn—as you can see, it sits beautifully high on the neck with a confident, sculptural presence.
Finished with a classic sterling silver chain and secure spring-ring clasp.
*Magnolia emerged in New York with a focus on modernist, wearable art jewellery, blending clean geometry with artisanal finishes. Their early pieces—like this necklace—show a strong influence of late 20th-century modernism, where form, texture, and material contrast took center stage over excessive embellishment.
An identical Magnolia necklace is currently listed online for $75 (± R1,200).See last picture)
