RARE FIND | GEORGIAN STERLING SILVER & BLACK DOT PASTE SHOE BUCKLE | c.1790s.
Now THIS is proper Georgian history! Dating to around the 1790s, this fabulous antique shoe buckle is crafted in sterling silver and completely framed by sparkling foiled-back cushion-cut Black Dot paste stones, individually mounted in traditional Georgian-style collet settings.
BLACK DOT PASTE was created to imitate the depth and brilliance of precious gemstones. Georgian examples were often foil-backed, with a tiny dark dot applied beneath the stone to enhance the illusion of depth — a wonderfully characteristic detail of period paste jewellery.
The original steel buckle mechanism remains at the centre, reminding us of its original purpose. Shoe buckles became an essential fashion accessory for both men and women during the 18th century, often made as luxurious detachable objects that could display wealth, taste and status.
And the BEST part? After more than 230 years, she absolutely does not need to retire! Wear it as a fabulous scarf clip, display it as a collectible, or easily suspend it from a chain and transform it into one seriously dramatic Georgian necklace — see the last picture for inspiration!
