Ohhh this is a BEAUTIFUL little piece of Victorian silver! An antique circa 1876 sterling silver brooch, wonderfully fashioned as an open folding fan and covered from edge to edge in intricate embossed and engraved decoration.

The fan is divided into radiating panels filled with tiny stars, leaves, beaded borders and geometric motifs, all picked out against a darkened background that gives the design wonderful depth. Even the little pivot at the base has been incorporated into the decoration — fabulous attention to detail!

THE AESTHETIC PERIOD
Dating from the height of the Victorian Aesthetic Movement of the 1870s–1880s, jewellery like this celebrated “art for art’s sake”. Designers moved away from purely sentimental Victorian motifs and embraced nature, geometry and influences from Japanese and wider Asian decorative arts. The folding fan became particularly fashionable during this period, making it such a wonderfully characteristic Victorian motif.

The reverse retains its original-style long pin fitting and carries a lovely little group of period silver hallmarks — exactly the sort of detail we LOVE finding on an antique piece.

At approximately 150 years old, this isn't merely a pretty silver brooch — it is a gorgeous surviving piece of Victorian design history.
