Simple, earthy and beautifully tactile, this solid nephrite jade ring has been carved entirely from a single piece of jade, creating a wonderfully smooth continuous band with no metal setting or embellishment to distract from the jade itself.

The stone displays that gorgeous “spinach jade” colouring — rich forest and olive greens with darker natural inclusions and mottling scattered throughout. Held up to the light, areas of the band become beautifully translucent, revealing subtle variations within the stone that are much less noticeable when worn.

Nephrite has been treasured for thousands of years, particularly throughout China and East Asia, where jade became far more than simply an ornamental material. It came to represent virtue, longevity, prosperity, protection and harmony, and carved jade rings and bangles have long been worn both decoratively and symbolically.

Nephrite is particularly suited to this type of carving because of its exceptional toughness and tightly interlocking mineral structure. Once polished, it develops the wonderfully smooth, almost waxy lustre so characteristic of good nephrite — something that can be beautifully seen across this ring.

I especially love the simplicity of this one. There is something wonderfully ancient and organic about a ring fashioned from one uninterrupted circle of jade, while its darker spinach-green colouring gives it a strong contemporary feel.
