This antique Victorian Mizpah brooch is a finely crafted sentimental jewelry piece, made from solid sterling silver, and designed in the shape of two interlocking hearts. It features deeply engraved inscriptions and symbolic motifs, reflecting the romanticism and sentimentality of the Victorian era.
The brooch is symmetrically designed, featuring two hearts overlapping, representing union and devotion.
This joined heart design was frequently used in romantic and mourning jewelry to symbolize eternal love and remembrance.
The left heart is engraved with the word “Mizpah” in bold capital letters, raised on a banner.
Below the Mizpah banner, the brooch carries a deeply engraved biblical verse:
"The Lord watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another."
This inscription comes from Genesis 31:49, a passage where Jacob and Laban make a covenant, asking God to watch over them in their separation.
The Mizpah blessing was popularly exchanged between lovers, soldiers, and families who were often apart for long periods during the Victorian and Edwardian eras.
