This chunky Designer cuff bangle is an extraordinary and rare piece from the 1970s by the celebrated South African silversmith Margaret Richardson.

The design embodies a bold, modernist aesthetic with its chunky, open cuff structure. The cuff is crafted in sterling silver, featuring sharp, geometric lines that highlight its modernist influence.

The centerpiece is a large, polished amethyst cabochon, expertly tube-set in the center. The amethyst is mounted on a raised, kite-shaped platform, adding depth and dimension to the piece. The design is both sculptural and architectural, with clean lines that emphasize the purple hue of the amethyst against the silver background.

This vintage piece is a remarkable example of Richardson's work and reflects the avant-garde style of the era.

The bangle is clearly hallmarked on the inside with her "MR" monogram.
Margaret Richardson (Johannesburg, late 1940s–early 1970s)

Margaret Richardson did her apprenticeship at the Fachschule Schwäbisch-Gmund in the 1930s after which she worked in Königsberg and then in Palestine. After the Second World War she immigrated to South Africa and established a studio in Cape Town until 1957, when she moved to Johannesburg. There she initially rented studio rooms in the Von Brandis Building in Johannesburg. Finally she settled at 909 Philadelphia Court in Von Wielligh Street. In the early 1970s she relocated to the United Kingdom and died shortly thereafter.
