What a rare and remarkable find! This early Victorian-era treasure is an antique pre-ban hand-carved ivory perfume/pomander amulet pendant, likely of Arabic origin.
Shaped like a teardrop and masterfully pierced on both sides, one face features a beautifully stylized calligraphic script, possibly the Arabic letter "ي" (ya) or a flowing form of "ع" (ʿayn) — characters often used to signify names, divine invocations, or poetic expressions in Arabic, Persian, and Urdu traditions.
The other side is adorned with a delicately carved open latticework grid, serving both an aesthetic and functional purpose: to allow scent to gently waft through.
Inside, nestled within, still lies a piece of cotton infused with the ghost of vintage perfumed oil, its earthy, musky notes lingering like a memory. A discreet opening at the base allows you to refresh it with your own oil — transforming it into a personal talisman that not only adorns but enchants.
In Arabic culture, scent holds profound significance. Perfume is considered not just a luxury but a reflection of purity, hospitality, and divine connection. The use of musk, oud, and rose oils carries symbolic weight — representing the soul, the sacred, and the ephemeral beauty of life itself.
Note : Hairline age cracks along the front and back speak not of flaws, but of authenticity and endurance, enhancing its antique charm.
