This exquisite and highly detailed hallmarked sterling silver fob pendant, crafted by the renowned silversmith William James Dingley, is an outstanding example of early 20th-century British silverwork.
Bearing full Birmingham hallmarks for 1927, this pendant was originally intended as a prize or commemorative medal and is engraved on the reverse with "Vanian Cup 1928."
Its elaborate openwork design, coupled with a central blank shield, suggests it was either a sporting trophy fob, a Masonic award, or a commemorative medallion.
The generous size and intricate craftsmanship indicate that it was meant to be a statement piece, typically worn on an Albert chain or as a watch fob on a gentleman's pocket watch chain. Today, it would make an elegant and historically significant pendant.
At the heart of the fob is a highly polished shield, subtly outlined by a fine engraved border.
This blank shield was likely left open for personalized engraving—a common feature in award medals of the era.
The shield's surface shows light patina, which is expected from a piece of this age but can be polished if desired.
The shield is ensconced in a highly decorative openwork border, featuring:
Scrolled acanthus leaves, adding a sense of fluid movement.
Floral motifs and curved flourishes, creating a baroque or Rococo aesthetic.
Symmetrical embellishments, reminiscent of traditional Victorian and Edwardian silverwork.
The delicate pierced work (cut-out sections) around the design demonstrates expert silversmithing techniques.
The backplate mirrors the front, featuring an engraved outline around the shield.
There are tiny decorative flourishes along the edges, enhancing the refined elegance of the design.
