SUPER RARE FIND!!This exquisite silver-gilt vinaigrette box is a hallmark example of the craftsmanship of Nathaniel Mills, one of the most celebrated English silversmiths of the 19th century. Created around 1843 during the early Victorian era, it showcases the meticulous detail and elegant aesthetic that made Mills’ work so collectible.

The vinaigrette has a refined scalloped-edge rectangular form, beautifully proportioned and balanced. Both sides of the exterior are expertly engine-turned and then enhanced with hand-engraved scrollwork and foliate motifs. One side features a cartouche left intentionally blank, framed with intricate flourishes, ideal for a monogram or inscription.

The piece is crafted from sterling silver and is gilded (gold-gilt) inside and out, giving it a rich golden hue.
The inner holds a pierced and engraved grille, acting as a barrier for a small sponge that would have been soaked in perfume. This ornate grille features fine scrollwork with leaves and floral patterns, a testament to the Victorian preoccupation with beauty and craftsmanship even in utilitarian items.

Vinaigrettes were personal hygiene items used during a time when the air in city streets could be foul. The sponge inside the vinaigrette would be doused in aromatic vinegar or perfume, allowing the user to mask offensive odors.

Nathaniel Mills was a master silversmith based in Birmingham, England, and became especially famous for his production of high-quality vinaigrettes, snuff boxes, card cases, and castle-top silverwork. His pieces are characterized by precision, grace, and innovative techniques.

Vinaigrettes by Nathaniel Mills are highly desirable, especially when in such good condition and retaining their original gilding and grille. Depending on condition, rarity, and decorative detail, these pieces typically command prices ranging from:
£275 (approx. R6,900) for simpler examples
£1,500 (approx. R37,000) for exceptional or rare pieces.
