This extraordinary Art Deco–era Czech brooch is unlike anything we’ve encountered before — the central starburst plaque is hand-carved from genuine tortoiseshell, not faux material, making it an exceptionally rare survivor in the world of Czech costume jewellery.
The tortoiseshell itself is mesmerizing: rich swirls of cognac, honey, and deep mahogany come alive when worn in daylight — but the true magic appears under UV, where the shell lights up with an eerie-beautiful green glow, a hallmark of genuine antique tortoiseshell.
Held in place by ornate brass filigree prongs, the star is crowned with an intricate multi-tiered filigree rosette, giving the piece a celestial, sun-bursting presence. Warm smoky-topaz Czech rhinestones are set into the rosette and bezel-set around the perimeter, adding golden sparkle and depth that complement the tortoiseshell’s natural warmth.
Pieces of this calibre — featuring real tortoiseshell in a Czech filigree build — are virtually unheard-of.
