WOW!!! This is one for the serious Bakelite collectors! An absolutely fabulous and OVERSIZED Art Deco-era novelty brooch, dating to circa the 1930s and fashioned as an exotic Persian-style curved dagger.

The dramatic blade is carved from wonderfully rich butterscotch Bakelite, with that gorgeous warm caramel colouring collectors adore. Contrasting beautifully against it is the translucent “apple juice” Bakelite handle — deeply ribbed and glowing shades of amber and honey as the light passes through it.

The detailing is just fantastic! Brass-tone fittings frame the handle and hilt, which is embellished with decorative rivet-style studs and a little pierced floral detail to the pommel. Suspended beneath the dagger are three graduated draped chains, adding movement and an almost theatrical quality to an already extraordinary design.

THE DAGGER MOTIF
Exotic and theatrical motifs were wonderfully suited to the bold jewellery of the Art Deco period, and figural Bakelite pieces like this have become particularly sought after by collectors. The exaggerated curved blade and elaborate hilt give this example tremendous presence — it really is a miniature piece of wearable sculpture.

And the SIZE!!! As shown worn in the final photograph, this is no shy little brooch — it makes a spectacular statement on a jacket, coat, scarf or even a simple white tee.

COLLECTOR VALUE: A similar example is currently being offered at approximately R4,200, while another comparable example sold for around US$140 / ±R2,300. As always, values vary according to condition, size, colour combination and originality.
