This remarkable and unusual brooch is crafted in solid 800 silver, designed with a strikingly modernist touch yet inspired by the deep past. Its round, roughly textured form is a deliberate echo of an ancient Greek coin, giving it the aura of an unearthed relic worn proudly in a new age.

At its heart is not an animal motif as it may first appear, but rather the stylized Greek letters “ΠΥΡ” (Pyr) – the ancient word for fire. In Hellenic culture, fire was not merely a physical element but a sacred force: the divine spark of life, the eternal flame of the gods, and the symbol of transformation, energy, and knowledge. Pyr was honored at the hearth of every home, guarded by the goddess Hestia, and carried into battle as a sign of courage and victory.

Framing the central inscription are small raised rosettes, timeless symbols of renewal and cosmic harmony, while a finely detailed bird in flight appears on one side – representing the soul’s liberation and the eternal link between the earthly and the divine. The juxtaposition of these motifs with the bold central inscription creates a design that is both archaic and avant-garde.

This brooch exemplifies how mid-20th-century designers often looked back to antiquity for inspiration, reinterpreting ancient symbols with a modernist eye. Its unusual abstract minimalism, contrasted with ancient script and coin-like form, makes it a fascinating fusion of eras – both a jewel and a miniature talisman.
