What a fabulous piece of history! Dating 1780, this iconic Maria Theresa Thaler is struck in substantial .833 silver, weighing approximately 28 grams and measuring 40 mm across.

The obverse features the magnificent portrait of Empress Maria Theresa, complete with the S.F. signature beneath, while the reverse displays the spectacular crowned Habsburg double-headed eagle. Even the edge is inscribed with the Latin motto “IUSTITIA ET CLEMENTIA” — “Justice and Clemency.”

THE AFRICAN CONNECTION
The Maria Theresa Thaler became one of the world's most important international trade coins, circulating extensively throughout Africa, the Red Sea and Middle East. It became particularly trusted in East Africa and Ethiopia, where its dependable silver content made it an accepted form of currency for generations.
